Oh, what a common dilemma – choosing between antique and modern dining sets. Well, dining sets or not, it is a subtopic of a more general one – antique versus modern furniture. You can argue, however, that modern dining sets are more practical, but that is a moot point, as high-quality antique tables and chairs are just as functionally good.
Antique dining sets are characterized by the ornateness of their designs. All antique furniture are individually crafted by a person, so if you buy one then you are guaranteed to receive an original piece that doesn’t complete duplicate set anywhere else. This also allows this type of furniture to obtain a certain “individuality” characteristic, something that totally lacks in modern furniture. Some people would call the atmosphere given by antique style as “ghostly”, but this vibe happens only if you go too overboard.
Modern dining sets are characterized by functionality and simple designs. They are all mass-produced, just like all the furniture in IKEA, for example. Yes, they are quite stylish and trendy, for sure, especially if you go after more expensive models (or more trendy models, such as counter height dining sets), but they do not have a lot of individuality to them. People sometimes would call the vibe that is emitted from modern furniture as “cold” and “remote”. This applies even to modern dining sets that are made by creative designers.
So those are the main differences between them. In the end, you can always just combine the two styles into either one object or incorporate two items of different styles inside one room. Either way the combo creates a specific “spicy” effect, which is quite good, just again – don’t go overboard, as there is a chance to just make your room into a mess that doesn’t look good. If you have some doubts in your designing skills, then just go for standard design furniture.
